Do you like the look of modern libraries?
>Do you like the look of modern No
Compared to older libraries with low ceilings, big floors, tightly packed with shelves? Any time. Maybe I simply haven't been to nice old libraries, but my old university library was an efficient storage facility, not a place people liked to spend time in or browse.
I like them, I just think library is a misnomer, at my old campus they changed the library after I left, I visited and really liked it, but it's more of a collaborative workspace, hardly anyone looks for books, it's mostly halls full of tables, chairs, workstations and private study rooms, the virtual library is way more complete with access to many, many journals, the public ones are also full of background noise. So if you want a place to just browse and read and research in silence I think home is a better place these days. You could question the public serviceability of old style libraries in the age of the internet but to me those are the real libraries
A hypnotizing image
>>6349 >home is a better place these days Is it really that quiet in Mexico?
>>6356 Inside your house? Well, isn't so everywhere? Especially if you're like a student who lives alone. I live in a small town so yeah, aside from some neighborhood dogs pretty quiet most of the time, there are bydlo neighborhoods u bug cities where there's like neighbors with music at inappropriate hours and stuff, but even there I wouldn't think that's so common that you can't find some quiet time in the day to study
>>6359 Also, noise cancelling earphones are pretty cheap Polite sage
>>6359 I guess it depends on how you define quiet. In Germany you will always have some noise in the background, the worst offenders being cars. And there are a lot of people who can’t behave and shout or talk loudly on the streets which you will hear inside the house. Sure, noise canceling headphones are a thing, but you could also wear those in a library.
>>6362 Well, yeah of course you can, but as I said, I find a lot of background noise in these big open space libraries too, more so than in most houses, in my experience the thing is that I don't see the advantage of the library if you can get the same information at home, unless it's for group projects, which create a lot of noise too
>>6364 I think people get distracted more easily at home
>>6349 You're right, I just spent some hours at the library I posted in OP and as you said it doesn’t have much resemblance to a traditional library besides that it still holds books. It tries to be everything at once, but for some reason it’s not a quiet place to study and read books. Most people just went there to take pictures of themselves instead of reading. I think one of the worst things about modern libraries is that they allow children. Children and infants do not belong in a library, don’t get me wrong I love children and their enthusiasm, but they should be brought to some playground or so, not to a library where people want quiet to focus and read.
>>6613 Bernd has great memories of the library as a child. I think children's sections in libraries are valid, but they should be really well separated from places where adults would like to concentrate.
>>6618 I think there should be special children libraries separate from normal ones
>>6619 That would be perfect separation, but not all towns have enough money for two libraries.
>>6624 >>6619 There is a Buchmobil, a bus with a library for children inside, which tours through my town.
>>6628 We have those as well, but parents will still bring their children to the normal library
>>6639 I also like the library scene in Se7en
>>6653 Where do I get one of these table lamps? They're so cosy.
>>6655 Every antique shop has them, probably also ebay
>>6655 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banker's_lamp
>>6657 Ah, nice, thanks! https://amzn.eu/d/8vT8eqL God damn it, I should've bought a larger record player stand, this would've fit amazingly.
I also like the library in Der Himmel über Berlin, although it’s modern
It feels different but I still think they’re cool.
