If you were selected to be part of the limited military, you were elite. The Waffen SS was the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party, was made up by WW1 veterans who weren't selected to be part of the Wehrmacht after the war as well as wananbe soldiers, children, old men, other nationalities and ethnicities, the conscripted, etc. The Waffen SS was more aggressive than the Wehrmacht, but more willing to accept casualties. It received less desirable objectives, like offenses or dealing with partisans.

I feel like, if we are going back even further, monasteries used to be full of Bernd types. Really was the only place for them or women who didn't want to birth kids.
