While it's exciting, in a way that would be very bad news for us. If life merging is not a Great Filter for the Fermi paradox, the filter is more likely to still be ahead of us.

>>10411 The most likely preceding candidates for the Great Filter have been abiogenesis (possibly disproved by this new Mars discovery), and transition from Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes. The latter possibility has also been put into question by the discovery of this unicellular organism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parakaryon So the probability of the Great Filter being in the future has risen. An alternate possibility is that life on both Mars and Earth shared the same origin and were spread to one or the other via asteroid bombardment ensuring inter-planetary pollination with the resulting debris. That would allow life on Mars to still be consistent with an extremely low likelihood of abiogenesis.
