It appears there is now some really strong evidence of life having existed on Mars at some point. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09413-0

A more layman-friendly summary here: https://www.theintrinsicperspective.com/p/we-are-not-low-creatures
It's boring life though.... If we want to find something interesting we will have to go to another star system entirely.
>Ultimately, we conclude that analysis of the core sample collected from this unit using high-sensitivity instrumentation on Earth will enable the measurements required to determine the origin of the minerals, organics and textures it contains. Damn. So it'll take another 20 years to understand it.
While it's exciting, in a way that would be very bad news for us. If life merging is not a Great Filter for the Fermi paradox, the filter is more likely to still be ahead of us.
>>10411 Ehh, the Fermi paradox is silly. Probably just nobody is near us or no high tech societies were able to evolve.
Or they are communicating in a way we can't detect.
>>10411 The most likely preceding candidates for the Great Filter have been abiogenesis (possibly disproved by this new Mars discovery), and transition from Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes. The latter possibility has also been put into question by the discovery of this unicellular organism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parakaryon So the probability of the Great Filter being in the future has risen. An alternate possibility is that life on both Mars and Earth shared the same origin and were spread to one or the other via asteroid bombardment ensuring inter-planetary pollination with the resulting debris. That would allow life on Mars to still be consistent with an extremely low likelihood of abiogenesis.
>>10414 That pattern on his chest...did he get an embarassing tattoo removed?
All tattoos are embarrassing.
