How important is the postermap to you? Asking because I have an issue with it. At the moment, I'm not posting on /int/, and the reason is the postermap. Geolocation is very accurate, and not everybody lives in a big city. I am aware of the fact that you cannot ever identify a user with geolocation, since it's inaccurate by design. However, if geolocation shows a rural area, the amount of people is already a lot smaller than if you live in a big city, and it's also more likely to stand out than just the 5th Berlinball. Let's say a malicious viewer watches the postermap and occasionally takes diffs, he can say which balls pop up when, and link this to posts, since posts are few, and postermap updates are fast. And if you talk about specific hobbies, it could be possible to say: There's one Bernd living in a 20k population region with one or more very specific hobbies. Still not enough to really identify anyone. But enough to keep me from using /int/. To be honest, even discussing this topic isn't possible without some information leaks, because anyone can already tell that I likely live in a rural area, I'm not posting on /int/ and I probably would want to post about some specific things. On the other hand: The value of the poster map is low in my opinion. Countryballs on /int/ are interesting, because on an international board, the origin country of the poster is important for context. The region inside that country is - aside from arguing prussians and bavarians or whatever - of little interest in comparison. So, in my opinion, the poster map is an unnecessary violation of privacy, while providing only a small benefit in return. I had no issue if I was able to use proxies or VPN, but it seems I'd have to get a komturcode first, which in turn can expire under certain circumstances, if I read that correctly. Maybe I will do that at some point, but maybe there are others who won't bother with IRC and simply won't use /int/. I assume the Komturcode requirement for proxy/VPN-posting protects the board from spam, so that's clearly important and I don't want to argue about that. Instead, I want to suggest to either get rid of the postermap altogether, or to maybe significantly reduce its accuracy (if that is even possible), or to just give the summary of how many balls per country are active (pic 2). All suggestions would solve my problem. Maybe there are more, but that's all I can think of for now. I can't tell whether there are more people who have an issue with this, and maybe there is a part irrational fear from my side involved. And to be clear: I have no problem with the mods seeing my IP, but I suppose you know that there are a lot of very motivated very angry people on the internet, and lurkers have been nudified in the past with very little information, so I think only minimal information about posters should be revealed, unless it's impossible to avoid. And the postermap is deliberately giving out information without a good reason to do so. Just "but it's interesting" is not a sufficient reason in my point of view. Not only a question to the mods/admins, everyone's opinion is appreciated.
>Geolocation is very accurate >it's inaccurate by design Shouldn't have used the same word here. To clarify: It's very accurate considering region, but inaccurate by design considering specific locations.
First of all, thank you for your feedback. We have the poster map because it already existed on the old KC and is therefore part of our cultural heritage. I think we can discuss this in this thread, but I don't think it will ultimately lead to the poster map being abolished. On the other hand, your problem can definitely be solved. It's not that we ban VPNs across the board. We've always communicated this: You can use VPNs as long as you don't mess around. If someone messes around, we block the entire ASN so that they can't just roll a new IP. This is the moment you would need a Komturcode. Thus, not all VPNs are banned, so you don't need a Komturcode for the non banned ones. Also: Perhaps you want to check here https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-web-services-demo where your IP would be located. We use the Maxmind database for locating IPs on the poster map. It might be that your location is completely off. Like the one Bayernball we have who says to be a Berliner.
>>790 >Like the one Bayernball we have who says to be a Berliner. I don't know if I'm meant by that, but when I post with mobile data (Telekom) I for some reason have a Bavaria ball, although I'm in Berlin.
>>792 Sames t. other Berlinbernd with Congstar for mobile phone which uses Telekom-net
Im located on a Cemetary (seems fitting kek)...the correct City but I would ned to drive at least 45 Minutes to get there. I got 0 Problems with having the Map.
Bernds position on the map is always hopping around the Belgian border near Monschau. But Bernd is actually from Aachen. So far for accurate positions. Bernd doesn't think the map is any security problem. Even if your location on the map is correct, nobody knows that it is correct.
>>790 >VPN I tried this, and I can confirm: I was able to make a post with VPN without Komturcode yesterday. However, I tried again today, and all VPNs available to me did not work. Since I use a free VPN (standard browser plugin), those are likely the first to get banned, because everyone has access to those. Maybe they aren't even consistent, never paid attention about the assigned IP ranges to be honest. So while that is indeed an option, it seems to be unreliable. >cultural heritage Well, a lot of things on old KC could be considered cultural heritage, but are banned here, and that's a good thing. Also, if you had to think about the top 10 things old KC was known for: I doubt the postermap would make the cut. But there's no need to argue: If you and everybody else thinks the postermap is not an issue, it's fine with me, I don't even need a reason for that. >It might be that your location is completely off The reason I made that post in first place is that it is scarily accurate in my case. It was accurate when I posted with my clear IP a while ago, and it was when I checked yesterday. It's slightly off today, though. Still, posting with my clear IP on /int/ is not an option. I doubt anyone would be thrilled to look out of the window in his backwater village, and have a big fat Germanball staring back at him from the sky. Also it's funny how people point out that the postermap is no problem, because it's off the mark, because in that case it seems there are three scenarios: 1. The postermap being useless, because it's completely off at times 2. The postermap being misleading / harmful, because people like me will, for good reason or not, either use VPN, or not use /int/ 3. The postermap being accurate, which would mean that I at least have a point that it might be a privacy issue Not sure if I'm missing something here, but for me that sounds like three reasons to ditch or modify it? And the cultural heritage in that case would be having a useless poster map? Sorry for being a smartass, but I want to point out why this seems so odd to me. But like I said, I'm definitely not here to make demands. I just wanted to give my point of view, and give my evaluation that /int/ is losing posts because of this, that at least is a fact, it has already happened a few times with me. But since the majority has no issue with the postermap, the loss is likely to be smaller than I thought, maybe it even is just me, and I suppose I can get a Komturcode if I want to. So, no action needed.
>>797 >scarily accurate in my case. It was accurate when I posted with my clear IP a while ago, and it was when I checked yesterday. It's slightly off today, though. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand-Effekt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect Dude. A) Nobody is trying to find out whether a post is yours, nor where you live B) There are 28 Germanballs on the map as of this writing, more than most others combined C) See link(s) - YOU are drawing attention towards yourself by trying to divert it
>>797 Fucks sake man just get a VPN or something if it bothers you that much. Protip: Nobody gives a fuck and you're by far not as important or visible as you think you are. Also, what the other Bernd says, if you were just a tiny bit more irritating I would probably feel compelled to troll you irl in some capacity.
Aww cute, you can see what city I live at from here.
Well, to summarize so far: I understand that most Bernds have no problem with the poster map and do not share the concerns of OP. The location isn't accurate enough in most cases to present a real security risk. Nevertheless it must not be that precise to accomplish the role it has as the poster map on how it was used since old KC times. So there will be no action about the poster map as far this goes. You can get more privacy by using a VPN or Proxy to post. If it's blocked you can get a Komturcode. Also consider that using a open proxy or the browser proxy services like you mentioned, it is very likely someone already used it to spam and therefore it's blocked. Most VPN posters we have use a payed one which don't tend to be blocked. So far, thanks for the feedback.
