After working for too many years I became quite wealthy through the last crypto/memestock/etc. bubbles and am no living off my fortune. I realised German seems to be one of the very few languages that has a precise word for this, "Privatier". Spanish has "rentista", but that word refers to living off a pension and the additional meaning of living off a fortune was just added on, so it's pretty inaccurate. English - as always - just has a few rather stupid formulations I've never heard: independent gentleman man of independent means man of private means How is this possible? There are more people living off their fortunes than ever before in the history of mankind, what do they all put in the "occupation" field on forms?
>what do they all put in the "occupation" field on forms? technically you are unemployed. You just don't like the sound of it.
Adventurer, the lone wanderer, the chosen one
>>29182 No, this is completely wrong. "Unemployed" carries a strictly defined meaning both in the legal and colloquial sense. The official unemployment statistics in most countries only count people who are not employed but are assumed to be actively seeking for a job as unemployed. Housewives for example don't count towards that number, neither do pensioners or people like me. Hence I'm not unemployed.
>>29183 Hmmm, "Adventurer" actually fits depending on the exact definition. I wonder what would happen if I started writing that on forms.
"independently wealthy" is what I see usually.
I do this too but on welfare.
In your case you're a retired investor. (doesn't matter if you struck it big on one bet, that's your title.). You could sell some shit and call yourself an entrepreneur. Unemployed academic -> independent researcher Wrote even just 2 paragraphs of unpublished book -> author ...it's all made up
